ASTON Villa were waiting today to hear confirmation of the last-gasp signing of Richard Dunne.

They believe the pounds 6m deal for the Manchester City defender just squeezed through the deadline but the sheer volume of red tape at Premier League HQ left Villa dangling overnight. Villa had already signed West Ham centre-back James Collins for pounds 5m to beef up a shaky defence.

Dunne passed a medical and agreed personal terms but the deal was dragged out by a wrangle between the player and City involving his severance package. He was due a testimonial at Eastlands next summer after 10 years with the club and wanted compensation.

When the Dunne deal is confirmed, it will make Villa the biggest spenders on the final day of the window.

However, their pounds 6m fee for Dunne was matched by Everton for Atletico Madrid defender Johnny Heitinga.

The Holland international was a late signing after jetting in at 3pm.

"We are really pleased to have Johnny with us," said boss David Moyes. …
