Senators' Coach Confident Team Can Repeat Success of 2008

The Fletcher High School football team went undefeated last year for the first time in the school's 71-year history and won district and conference championships.

But this year, the team's most dynamic offensive play-makers have graduated and a realigned district pits it against some challenging opponents.

However, Joe Reynolds, entering his 20th and final season as the Senators' head coach, could have one more trick up his sleeve.

"We've lost some quality Division I guys, but we've replaced them with experienced players," Reynolds said. "We have speed on both sides of the ball. We're going 10-0 again until we lose a game."

Senior quarterback Jake Medlock, who added strength through a rigorous offseason conditioning program, will lead the Senators' explosive offense. A dual threat with quick feet and a strong arm, Medlock has already been offered scholarships from Florida International and Arkansas and is on the short lists at LSU, Mississippi State and Florida State.

Medlock will have talented targets in wide receivers Brandon Little, Nate Scruggs and Brandon Matthew. Scruggs' older brother, Lamar, the Senators' most electric play-maker last season, is a receiver at South Carolina, where he is battling a hamstring injury.

Junior speedster Mitchell Hester will replace departed star running back Deschion Baskerville in the backfield. He'll be joined by senior fullback/tight end Zack Reynolds, the team's strongest player, who has drawn interest from the Naval Academy and Furman. Senior offensive tackle Dylan Bostick, a giant at 6-feet-6 and 275 pounds, and junior offensive tackle Derrick Thorpe will anchor a line that should provide plenty of holes for the Senators' ground attack. Senior kicker Dylan Lynch, a transfer from Stanton, has a strong leg and Reynolds expects him to contribute long-range field goals this season. …
