We're Just Ban Away One Injury or from Trouble; Former Toon Skipper Bob Moncur Admits He Is Concerned: At the Limited Options in Defence Available to Hughton

NEWCASTLE UNITED legend Bob Moncur says he shares the concern of some senior Toon senior players that the current squad lacks cover in key areas going into what many feel will be a long hard winter.

Moncur feels that while the first choice back four has had no real problems dealing with the strike forces it has encountered so far, should one of the senior figures go down with an injury, the step up from second string level to the first-team stage is a huge ask for younger players.

In running the rule over the United back four, Moncur told the Chronicle: "I have been impressed with Danny Simpson so far - he seems up for the challenge of helping Newcastle get out of the Championship.

"He's quite clearly a rightback but has had to muck in and play centre-back which has exposed our lack of numbers.

"Really you want somebody who can dominate in the air and, at 5ft 9in, I don't know if he's better as a nippy full-back.

"Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini seem to be surviving as a partnership, although for many there wouldn't have been a lot of love lost had the latter left.

"That said, Newcastle probably did miss him in the game with Leicester City, because there isn't too much experience knocking around at the minute.

"At left-back there seems to be only one show in town with Jose Enrique and, despite not having much competition for his slot, he has excelled so far.

"People may be wary of the defence, but four clean sheets in a row in the Championship says it all at the moment and the only way of getting back at the critics.

"Generally, if you don't concede goals as a defender, there aren't any critics!" However, Moncur is fearful of the consequences should Taylor or Coloccini pick up an injury. He said: "Going into the deadline day it was on my mind what might happen if we didn't sign anybody and one of them did get injured. …
