MARTON have marched to the summit - and the view is so good they have no intention of climbing down.

The club has revelled in a meteoric rise from the second tier of the Darlington Building Society NYSD League to landing three major trophies in a sensational season.

Chairman Gary Knight has spent 32 years with the club, since first playing for the junior sides at the age of 11.

And clinching the title this week with a Bank Holiday win over Hartlepool to add to the Kerridge and Macmillan Cups, achieved under the inspired captaincy of veteran all-rounder Graham Shaw, was a proud moment for the chairman and the whole club.

"The club is the thing," he said. "It's not a case of splitting the first team, second team, third team, and supporters into different categories.

"Everybody is part of the club, and everyone has their own attributes that help make it what it is. From the players to those behind the scenes, the ethic is the same.

"For many years we have tried to move the club on a bit, year by year, and that has led us to where we are today. And the important thing now is that we don't stand still, but retain that desire to make it a little better all the time."

Gary is quick to point out that it started many years before he was at the helm, and hopes it will continue long after he has stepped down.

"We always believed that the club could reach the top, but the amazing thing is that it has happened so quickly (just four years after promotion).

"The likes of Middlesbrough and Guisborough were the big established clubs. We have consolidated and built and now feel we can sustain that level.

"But at the same time we know that when we have a season like this one, it won't be easy to emulate it. But success can breed success.

"On the field we have won games this season that we would have lost in the past, because players have enjoyed winning and want to go on doing it. We want players knocking on the door wanting to come and part in our success."

As for Gary Knight the player, there may be a bit more to come. …
