Specialist Staff Shortage at Hospital; Staff Drain

GRAFTON Base Hospital needs more staff.

Despite the excitement of work beginning on the refurbishment of the hospital's emergency department and operating theatres, complaints about staffing levels persist.

Clarence MP Steve Cansdell on Friday took a phone call from a distressed hospital staff member, angry about two psychology positions being left vacant for 12 months. According to the staff member, the hospital is still in need of a child psychologist and a child and family psychologist.

Mr Cansdell was told the North Coast Area Health Service (NCAHS) should be more on the front foot in advertising the positions. The staff member believed NCAHS was intentionally trying to avoid filling the positions in order to save wages.

The Daily Examiner checked the NCAHS employment website and neither position appeared to be advertised.

Mr Cansdell said there was 'an enormous gap' in child services. …
