Murray Meets Giant Croat after Denting Home Hopes

ANDY MURRAY eased into the last 16 of the US Open at Flushing Meadows with a dominant straight-sets win over American wild card Taylor Dent.

The British world No 2 was never in any serious trouble against the bighitting serve and volleyer, taking the contest by 6-3 6-2 6-2 in just one hour and 30 minutes.

Murray's success lay in countering Dent's strategy with his trademark service returns, keeping 88% in play and scoring eight return winners, and well judged cross-court passing shots.

He said: "I returned really well and that was probably the key to the match.

"I managed to finish the match off well and served well.

"I have always liked playing against serve and volleyers.

"I used to practice a lot with my brother and he used to serve and volley when we were young and that probably helped me."

Murray, who reached the final last year before losing to Roger Federer, will now play Croatian 16th seed Marin Cilic for a place in the quarter-finals. …
