Defending Champ Aims for Mackay Tennis Title

TENNIS: Reigning men's singles champion Damien Casey has had to wait a couple of years, but this weekend he will finally get the opportunity to defend his title at the Mackay Closed Tennis Championships.

The tournament is back after a lack of numbers meant a two-year absence from the Mackay calendar.

"It will be good to get a chance to defend the title," Casey said.

The 20-year-old said he is "pretty confident" he can go back-to-back, but is wary of a couple of his competitors - one of which is visiting Frenchman Regis Corblin.

"He's probably my main rival," Casey, who is regular on the North Queensland tennis circuit, said.

Casey expects tournament director Mathew Blackley to also provide plenty of competition in the open men's division, while Troy Debondi and 15-year-old talent Joshua Podosky should put up a strong fight as well.

The open women's defending champion Creagh Bagnall will also be playing again this year in an attempt to keep her crown. …
