ORMESBY'S 16 year old Karina Lefevre won the gold medal in the girls singles in the UK School Games table tennis event for the second successive year at Newport.

Karina notched her second gold when she helped North-east squad to victory in the girls team event.

There she was joined by her Ormesby team mate Chloe Whyte, who also played a prominent role in helping the North-east team to the gold.

Top seed in the singles, Karina was unbeaten throughout the three day event, winning 16 singles and three doubles matches.

In the girls singles the Ormesby girl beat three of her England team colleagues to clinch the title.

She overcame Natalie Slater of Staffordshire by 3-1 in the quarter final, Lucy Davison of Derbyshire by 3-1 in the semi final and Sheffield''s Melissa Wright by 3-1 in the final.

In the team championship, the North-east beat the South-east in the semis by four sets to nil and the East Midlands by 4-2 to take the gold.

In the team with Karina and Chloe were Mary Fuller of Bradford and Melissa White of Sheffield.

Chloe played a vital part in the team event with a 3-1 victory over Natalie Slater in the final against the Midlands.

Earlier in the competition Chloe had scored a 3-0 victory over Martha Travers of the South-west.

Meanwhile Ormesby''s second team opened their campaign in the First Division of the British Table Tennis League at Hyndburn by winning three of their matches and drawing one.

Ormesby opened with a 6-2 victory over local rivals Northfield with Andy Wilson scoring two wins against Bryn Drinkhall and Mark Simon.

Patrick Thomas won both his matches against Dan Welsh and Drinkhall while, playing at No 4, Karen Shepherd excelled to beat both Mark Simon and Tony Wilson in five game sets. Northfield''s two were won by Wilson and Welsh who beat Steve Brunskill. …
