MAJOR regeneration has been changing the face of Benton, north of Newcastle, for some years and the area has become an increasingly popular place in which to live.

The soaring house prices of a few years ago meant that many people found traditionally popular places unaffordable for buying and renting and the Benton area became increasingly popular, attracting s a range of new residents, from students to young professionals and families.

The centre of the Benton district is the old village of Longbenton which stretches along Front Street on the Old Coast Road. But the area now stretches much further afield and is a busy, bustling area with much to offer and a good range of facilities.

The opening of the railway station in the 19th Century caused the district around the railway to be developed as a desirable, out-oftown suburb. It retains its character to this day and two areas, around the village itself and around the station, have been designated as conservation areas.

There is a huge range of properties, from traditional flats to 1930s semis and large detached plus there is a good supply of new homes.

Benton Metro station dates from 1871. The line was electrified in the early years of the 20th Century and later became part of the Metro system. The original station buildings are still in use.

Modern-day transport is good, with regular bus services plus there are Metro stations at Four Lane Ends and Longbenton. To the north west of the station, stretching across to South Gosforth, is Longbenton Estate. This area is undergoing substantial redevelopment and refurbishment, with an on-going and long-term major new housing programme, new shops, community centre plus many other facilities transforming the area.

A section of this district is administratively part of the city of Newcastle but the greater part, which lies inside the Parish of St Bartholomew, Longbenton, is within North Tyneside.
