Boxer Spars Up for Aussie Team Trials

THERE will be no end-of-year ease up for Toowoomba boxer Brent Rice as he continues to chase his short and long-term goals of representing Australia.

Rice is back in training for a series of tournaments following a successful 2009 which included a second successive National Golden Gloves victory and a trip to the Ukraine as part of the Australia Queensland Kostya Tszyu Academy select team.

His year-ending competitions include the Queensland and National titles which the sixteen-year-old hopes will springboard him towards the Commonwealth Games selection trials in April next year.

While most people look forward to the year tapering off Rice is looking forward to stepping up over coming months.

"I've been pretty happy with the way the year's gone for me," Rice said.

"I won the Golden Gloves 52kg division again, and before that I stepped to 57kg level and won the Wide Bay title.

"They were both fairly comfortable victories, so things have been going well. …
