IRS Takes Cars over Owed Taxes; the Ponte Vedra Man Is Accused of Owing Nearly $683,000

PONTE VEDRA BEACH - Armed Internal Revenue Service agents had high hopes Monday when they raided the Ponte Vedra Boulevard property of a man the agency says owes nearly $683,000 in taxes.

They expected to find 13 vehicles on Donald F. Hanks' property near Guana Lake, including two Rolls Royces, two Porsches and a 1981 Ferrari, court documents show. The agents had four wreckers standing by in a nearby parking lot to help them move the vehicles.

The final haul? Just two Mercedes Benzes and a Jeep Cherokee - not even close to enough to make a dent in Hanks' tax bill.

A tearful Hanks told the Times-Union after the seizure that he'd already sold his other cars to live on after he lost his job and the IRS and two divorces took everything else he owned. He said the agency foreclosed on his home, closed his bank accounts and sued him for taxes he said he doesn't owe.

Monday's seizure was insult on top of injury, he said. …
