ONLY minutes into the Northumberland Sea League match, Paul Westmorland - fishing as a substitute in Seaton Sluice's A team - landed the heaviest fish.

It also gave him second place in zone 2 behind Bob Ferguson with three cod for 7-4-8 and a cracking pollock of 7lb 2oz from St Mary's Island, for the rest of the match his rod never moved.

This was the story told by many anglers fishing Whitley Bay's 50th anniversary open, taking fish on the ebb and little on the flood.

Trevor Ferry scored a great victory in very poor conditions taking five cod from Cresswell for 14lb 2oz.

The surprise area was the rocks at Cullercoats, where Joe Wall took second place with the heaviest fish of the match, a lovely cod of 10lb 3oz, plus a specimen pout of 2lb 1oz.

Junior angler Sean Herman fishing nearby had a cracking mixed bag containing a pollock, a coalfish, a small pout and a very nice plaice for 4lb 5oz to take the junior section.

DAIRY DATES October 3rd: Horden beach, Bell Hole to Deneholme, 5pm-10pm. NFSA size limits apply (whiting 32cm), two hooks, entry pounds 5, payout heaviest fish/bag. pounds 1 from entry fee donated to RNLI. Registration on the beach.

October 4th: Seaton Sluice open 8.30am-12:30pm, Tynemouth pier to Amble pier, 1st prize pounds 500 plus prize table. Register Bank House Club 7-8am or local tackle shops in advance. Entry pounds 10, optional pools, juniors free with paying adult, Barry (01670) 732851 or Gav (07974) 130205.

Although surprisingly most of the fish came from the rock ends, the Tyne - which did fish on the flood - produced some decent bags.

Steve Harper took six cod and three coalfish from the Sand Bar for 11lb 11oz for third, followed by Don Nicholson with two nice cod from Hartley for 11lb 5oz, including the second heaviest at 7lb 2oz.

Shirley Newton landed the special prize for 50th with a flounder of 1lb 6oz taken at Lynemouth. …
