400 Donations in and Still Counting

VETERAN blood donor Ron Baker has kept the heartbeat of the blood service pumping for almost 50 years.

When he first gave blood as a naval officer with HMAS Sydney, his motive was to chat with the "good-looking nurses".

Since those humble beginnings he has gone far and beyond to reach an impressive milestone - more than 400 donations.

The North Ipswich resident was acknowledged for his champion effort during National Blood Donor Week at the Brisbane Convention Centre.

But he said recognition was the last thing on his mind when he donated.

"I get a lot of satisfaction out of it because I know how much people need it," Mr Baker said.

"There are so many people out there that really need this."

It took Mr Baker 28 years to reach 100 donations, but rapidly built up a personal tally and now sits at 416 donations.

"I used to give whole blood which meant I could only donate four times a year," he said. …
