ONCE upon a time, being able to transport seven people in a car was pretty much the exclusive preserve of large people carriers.

Variously known as 'minivans' and more recently 'MPVs' everyone wanted a piece of the action. Then makers of the all-conquering Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) started getting in on the act and these days you can even get a Peugeot 308 that can pack seven in. With all the choice that's available, manufacturers no longer see a large MPV as a 'must have' in their model range. Mitsubishi's MPVs have always had an in-between quality, and in this respect the Grandis is no different.

But while the company's MPVs of old have had a degree of anonymity about them, the Grandis stands out as something out of the ordinary. Chunky and muscular looking, there isn't much else around like it.

Striking looks are also a feature of the car's interior and it boasts a sleek, almost space-age dash.

Its gear lever is mounted on the steering column, and once you have got used to it, it's really is the ultimate in convenience as it's so easy to reach. …
