Straw Claims That Criticism of Baroness Scotland Is Sexist

JACK STRAW today accused critics of Baroness Scotland of sexism as the controversy over her employment of an illegal Tongan migrant escalated.

In an interview, the Justice Secretary said the Attorney General was being attacked excessively because she is a woman. It came as the pressure on Lady Scotland continued to mount after her housekeeper Loloahi Tapui claimed that the Attorney General failed to check her passport before hiring her to work.

Her testimony contradicts Lady Scotland's assertion that she had examined the document.

It has prompted renewed claims that the Government, which has accepted the peer's version of events, has engaged in a "whitewash" to prevent a resignation or sacking.

However, Mr Straw hit back at Lady Scotland's critics: "Had the attorney been a man, I suspect none of this opprobrium would have fallen, because they would have said, 'Oh, I leave all these things to my wife. …
