Crowds down

FOOTBALL: Football Federation Australia boss Ben Buckley said declining attendances in this season's expanded A-League competition was something he always expected.

Buckley was again forced to defend the league's falling crowds as his organisation yesterday deferred the introduction of a western Sydney franchise by one year to the 2011-12 season.

Bomber reward

AFL: Essendon coach Matthew Knights has been rewarded for overseeing the club's first AFL finals appearance in five seasons with a two-year contract extension.

Knights, who was already signed for 2010, is now locked in until the end of the 2012 season.
