England Will Not Dwell on Defeat

Article excerpt

CRICKET ANDREW Strauss may have been "irritated" by his side's Champions Trophy loss to New Zealand, but will be privately delighted England's semi-final will be played at Centurion.

Losing a vital toss at the Wanderers yesterday, England were put in to bat and struggled from the off on a minefield of a pitch. Victors New Zealand remain in Johannesburg for the semi-finals while England return to the scene of Sunday's impressive victory over South Africa for a last four clash with the winners of Group A. England posted just 146, a target New Zealand overhauled in just 27.1 overs.

Reflecting on the four wicket defeat, Strauss said: "I am irritated because you don't like losing games of cricket ever. If we had somehow mustered a score of 200 it would have been competitive but we weren't able to do that.

"There is no point in us dwelling on it too much because we are now going to be playing at Centurion and we will have to remember what we did well against South Africa. We were soundly beaten (by New Zealand). The wicket did a lot early on and as a batsman you needed some luck to survive.

"All credit to the New Zealand bowlers, they were accurate and the wicket helped them out. It was probably a bit more uneven in the afternoon."

Stuart Broad, who took four wickets, will have a scan on a sore buttock while Strauss is "optimistic" keeper Matt Prior (virus) would be fit for the semis.

Association Sport, Johannesburg New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori insisted it was important to keep the spirit of cricket at the forefront of people's minds after he reprieved Paul Collingwood, who was technically run out after wandering out of his ground at the end of the 11th over with England in trouble at 27 for three.
