Purple Power Warming Up

Article excerpt

Yes the Jacaranda trees are starting to blossom - the trees and the essence of this magical spring festival is surely coming alive. Soon our beautiful City will be adorned in mauve, and the community celebrating - dancing in the streets.

How are your Jacaranda Thursday street theatre ideas coming along? Mrs Joy Zietsch should be (if she has not already) visiting all business houses with Festive Shops and Staff - nomination forms. Joy also Director of The Daily Examiner Parade of Youth March, with this year's banner theme being "Memories of a Past Jacaranda"- the banners that the schools present (as they March from Memorial Park to Market Square) Saturday, October 31 are certainly something to behold. The efforts and creativity of students and teachers is always outstanding, and I am looking forward to this event.

Our Festival President Mrs Helen Weatherstone is making the rounds also with the Craftsman Homes Spot It, Jacaranda Window and Indoor Floral Displays, and Float Procession nomination/entry forms. Helen will fill you in with more detail regarding these events in her Jaca Chat column next week.

Don't forget to grab an entry for the Jacaranda Garden Competition - entry forms are available from the Jacaranda Festival office, McKimms Real Estate, Westpac and local nursery outlets. Entries close 4pm Friday, October 16 and judging takes place Saturday, October 24 to Monday, October 26 The garden competition is directed by Mrs Helen Campbell, and she is more than happy to field any inquiries you may have, so please give call her on 6643 1645.

Back on the Jacaranda calendar in 2009 is the Grafton Cycle Club's Jacaranda Criterium, Saturday, November 7 starting at 1pm. Director Mr David Brown tells me this event is a 'Hot Dog' course in Prince Street with plenty of spectator support, making for an especially entertaining afternoon. There is great prize money up for grabs in four graded sections as well as a junior novice section too. This event forms Round 2 of the Northern Rivers Criterium Series and is proudly supported by Clarence Valley Council, Koppers Wood Products and McDonalds of Grafton and Coffs Harbour. For more information please contact David on 6644 7387.

Our Jacaranda Queen Candidates are still working very hard and have a few more fundraising events coming up. Please show them your support, (the funds that these ladies raise keeps the Jacaranda Festival alive and the family fun week long activities free you the community to attend).
