I heard a shriek. Footsteps thumped on the stairs. A shrill, excited voice cried: "Look. Look!" Anxiously we raced to the window, only to observe a scene of relative tranquillity - broken by a child riding a small motorcycle around the house, safely negotiating trees and gardens. But it turned out that this was the focal point of all the excitement. Our grand-daughter Caitlyn was riding the bike - on her own. She'd been encouraged by her brother and friends to overcome her fear of falling off and had now acquired a new skill. The other children were justly proud that it was their encouragement that had made the difference.

Encouragement is a powerful ingredient in our lives. When we are fearful in the face of trying something new, the encouragement of others will make all the difference. This fact is underlined by the person who wrote:
