MALENY'S water supply has dried up - again.

The weirs have stopped flowing and residents are being asked to voluntarily cut their water use.

Queensland Water Commission acting chief executive Daniel Spiller said the community's co-operation would help avoid the introduction of regulated water restrictions, which have occurred in the past.

He is asking residents to cut their daily personal consumption to 200 litres, from the 230-litre average, to ensure enough water is available for the township and rural residents until the wet season begins.

"Maleny residents have been placed on water restrictions in the past, but they can stave off the need for them this year by making small changes in the home and outdoors," Mr Spiller said.

Mayor Bob Abbot said water levels in Obi Obi Creek had dropped during the traditionally dry start to spring.

"This is not an unusual occurrence and I am confident the community will respond to avoid going on to water restrictions early," he said. …
