A DRUNKEN man who gave a "ludicrous" excuse to explain how he smashed his ex-partner's window has been spared jail.

Judge John Walford said Martin Wood deserved to go to prison but decided to give him another chance after hearing of the efforts he had made to take himself away from trouble.

Teesside Crown Court heard the 27-year-old had moved away from Stockton where his ex-girlfriend lives and had curbed his drinking.

On May 9 at about 8.50pm, he went to his former partner's home. She was out but her new partner was at the address.

Wood told him: "I am going to smash your face in and smash her face in again."

He then punched his fist through the front window and ran away.

The offence also placed him in breach of a suspended sentence for a previous assault on his then partner and another criminal damage.

The court heard he told police on the second occasion he had just been passing through the street when he fell into the window. …
