FAB FLOURNOY reckons that the rejuvenated Leicester Riders have the ability to turn the BBL's twohorse race into a three-way scrap for honours this season.

Flournoy's Newcastle Eagles won an unprecedented treble last season, with only eventual league and play-off runners-up Everton Tigers managing to hang on to their coat tails during an impressive second half of the campaign.

Hopes in the North East and Merseyside are high for a repeat performance this term, but Flournoy believes that tonight's opponents Leicester are more than capable of gatecrashing the title party.

A 113-93 win against Sheffield Sharks in the first round of games confirmed suspicions that coach Rob Paternostro has turned a promising team into potential contenders for honours.

They are a big scoring, dynamic side with a strong back court and it will be intriguing to see how the Eagles' formidable defence manages to cope.

Flournoy's men made the perfect start to the season by winning games against the Cheshire Jets and Scottish Rocks, but he thinks this game will be an even bigger test of his new-look side.

He reckons the Riders, who also face Everton this weekend, will be full of confidence and desperate to prove a point to the rest of the league.

"Leicester weren't quite there last season, but they have strengthened and they will probably break up the dominance of us and Everton this season," he said.

"Really, it was only us and Everton battling it out last season.

"We got beaten by other teams over the course of the season but they were the only team going consistently toe to toe with us.

"But I would probably include Leicester in that bracket this year.

"They have some good newcomers in (Bradd) Wierzbicki and (Tack) Minor who will be their main threats but they have veterans too and a good mix in their squad. …
