Dyson Sights Set on US Masters

Article excerpt

SIMON DYSON is "absolutely buzzing" after the biggest win of his life - but there will be no resting on his laurels when he returns to action next week.

Dyson's victory in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews yesterday, achieved with a closing 66 he had no hesitation naming as the round of his career, has taken him top of Europe's Ryder Cup points table.

With the first prize of more than pounds 485,000, he is also up from 20th to eighth on this season's Tour money list and from 92nd to 44th in the world rankings.

The last of those will be his main motivation when he tees off in next week's Portugal Masters.

Dyson has never played in The Masters at Augusta National, and if he can stay in the top 50 until the end of the year he will make his debut next April.

"That's the one I want to go for," said the 31-year-old, after beating new money list leader Rory McIlroy and Oliver Wilson by three.

As for the Ryder Cup, he added: "I try not to think about too much to do with it, but obviously it's definitely in my mind now.

"That's what I tried to bring to the last two Seve Trophy teams, and it seems to get everybody up for it like I am."

There is also the Volvo World Match Play at the end of the month to look forward to - and, of course, next year's Open back at the Home of Golf.

As he was clinching his fourth Tour win there, playing partner Darren Clarke advised him to take his time.

"I said 'why?' and he says 'It doesn't get any better than this' - and he's absolutely bang on."

In August, Dyson won in Holland with a course record-equalling last round of 63 - coming from six behind to win in a play-off.

He reckoned that was his bestever round until yesterday. …
