WE had an early warning about a tsunami descending on Rockhampton but thousands chose to ignore it.

Former Rockhampton district health boss Bill Beresford issued the 2007 alert about a future wave of diabetes hitting the city and unfortunately for thousands of residents his forecast was accurate.

Yesterday CEO of the Queensland branch of Diabetes Australia, Michelle Trute, said at least 3355 people in the Rockhampton district had been diagnosed with diabetes, and the same number again could have it or be developing it without even knowing.

Queensland Health estimates 206,000 Queenslanders have type 2 diabetes with another 200,000 unaware they are living with the disease.

This is a scary scenario and maybe as some of you read this today the penny will be dropping that you may be among them.

The harsh reality is that while the majority of Rockhampton citizens live reasonably healthy lifestyles, there are those who are asking for trouble, thanks to poor diets and a lack of exercise or sporting pursuits. …
