A Day to Remember Denis

Article excerpt

THE Denis Callinan Beach Walk and GreenLine SUP race and Ocean Paddle (7km) will run on Sunday, November 8, at 7am.

A beach walk from Currumbin to Kirra dedicated to the late Surfing Saint Denis Callinan is open to the public for a gold coin donation.

Proceeds will go back to the Denis trust with SAND (Surfers Against Nature's Destruction) Surf for Life and GCTOP (Gold Coast Traffic Offenders Program), an initiative that Denis personally constructed and contributed to the legal system.

The Denis Callinan "All Roads Lead to Kirra" beach walk will begin at 7am Sunday morning from the south side of Elephant Rock, Currumbin, and walk to Kirra on Sunday, November 8.

The public are asked to use the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary car park for parking and a shuttle bus has been provided to pick up the walkers from Kirra and return them back to Currumbin.

The Callinan family is super-stoked about the walk being dedicated to Denis.

A permanent plaque in memory of Denis is to be mounted on the building between Elephant Rock Cafe Restaurant and Matt Butels physio on Tuesday, October 27.

Denis was a widely respected surfer/solicitor and prolific fundraiser, much-loved and much-missed.

His contribution to humanity and connecting people to worthy causes was legendary.

A super keen surfer, whether it was Burleigh, Hawaii, Samoa or the Miami/Mermaid beach breaks that he learnt to surf in.

Denis also created Surfers Against Nuclear Destruction in the early 80s, involving Peter Garret and the Midnight Oil Band.

He unexpectedly passed away in January last year.

The GreenLine SUP and Ocean Paddle Race will go in tandem with the walk.

Paddlers encouraged to unload their paddling craft on the beach and park in the Currumbin WildLife Sanctuary car park.

After the paddle, a shuttle bus will be available to take the paddling equipment from Kirra back to Currumbin.

Prizemoney is on offer, but this is not deemed to be a serious race and is open to all craft wishing to paddle from Currumbin to Kirra. …
