YOU can take the girl out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the girl, according to Karlene Polglase.

The woman beside Tweed Mayor Warren Polglase was born in Mallee country South Australia.

While she has been on the Tweed more than 20 years, she believes those good country values are still standing her in good stead.

"I was raised on a property - I'm a country girl at heart," she said.

"I have been an active member of the community since I can remember - ever since I joined the Junior Red Cross."

As a teen, Karlene was involved in setting up the local netball competition and, at 17, became the youngest association president.

She met Warren when the young real estate agent came to work in the local Elder-Smiths.

"He was an Adelaide boy and we met and fell in love," she said.

"When we married he joined in the family farm."

That was almost 46 years ago.

The family moved to the Riverina area of New South Wales about 30 years ago - living at Bunaloo near Deniliquin. …
