Magpie the Victim of Brutal Attack by Kids; Bird Pelted with Rocks in Casino, WIRES Carer Says

THE NSW Wildlife Information Rescue and Education Service Inc (WIRES) came to the rescue of an adult male magpie that had been injured from children throwing rocks at it in Casino recently.

WIRES Northern Rivers bird co-ordinator Melanie Barsony took care of the bird, which was struck by a rock that badly broke a wing and caused severe bruising.

"The children returned the next day, armed with sticks and rocks and the intention of finishing it off," she said. "One child also climbed the tree in an attempt to get to two chicks in the nest. Luckily for the magpies, local residents rescued the injured bird and called WIRES."

Ms Barsony took the magpie to a vet, where his wing was strapped and he was given a course of antibiotics.

"After two weeks the swelling and bruising on his shoulder and body was still showing," she said.

"Magpies are breeding, as everyone is sure to know by now, with birds actively defending their territory and young. …
