Labor MLC Backs Bid to Block Quarry Expansion; Developer {Lsquo}surprised' to Hear Politician Attended Protest Rally

TUCKI and Tuckurimba residents who have united to oppose the controversial expansion of Champion's Quarry have found a welcome supporter in State Labor MLC Greg Donnelly.

An application to expand quarry extractions from 68,000 tonnes a year to 250,000 tonnes is being assessed by the NSW Department of Planning.

In February, Lismore City Council rejected an application to increase extractions to 200,000 tonnes.

Mr Donnelly yesterday told a meeting of about 50 concerned residents that they should not give up the fight.

"The tough yards, in some sense, are still ahead of us," he said. "It is so, so important for us to work together and understand what this next level is."

Quarry owner Jeff Champion was 'surprised' to hear that the State politician had attended the meeting.

"The application is lodged and it's going through the process. Politicians should not be sticking their noses into things like this," he said. …
