"CHERISH our boys", that's the underlying message from educational consultant and advocate in the area of boys' education, Ian Lillico.

Mr Lillico was in Gympie yesterday advising parents and teachers on ways to better engage with boys, sharing strategies for relating to them and ways of supporting them in school.

Addressing the problem of Australian boys' declining standard of school performance, Mr Lillico said, "we need to cherish boys and we need to engage them".

The workforce is changing very quickly and many traditional areas that boys looked to for work are going or gone.

Boys now need to have very good interpersonal skills and high emotional intelligence but we don't want them to be girls, the father of three grown sons told The Gympie Times yesterday.

Mr Lillico has taken leave from his job as a school principal in Western Australia, to travel around the world and advise parents and teachers on ways to better motivate boys. …
