Our Fervent Plea Is To: 'Send 'Er Down, Huey'

Article excerpt

THERE'S at least one memorable factor about the unusual weather we are currently being subjected to, gardening friends; 'tis something we will talk about in times to come.

All that we really need is for old Huey to give us an adequate rainfall, so my fervent plea goes out: "Send 'er down, Huey".

The pic this week, readers, shows the flowers and leaves of a native vine growing in my garden, one which has an interesting history.

The view shown is that of the flowers and leaves of Pandorea pandorana, the Wonga-wonga Vine, and one which has been planted in the Warwick Peace Garden archway.

During research on this, an interesting factor emerged saying that this vine was discovered in Australia in 1797 and was identified as Tecoma australis.

This data came from my volumes The Dictionary of Gardening, An Encyclopaedia of Horticulture, printed in London in the 1880s.

Since that time, the genus reference has been changed more than once, first to Bignonia, then to Campsis, possibly others, but the present day botanical name is Pandorea pandorana, a member of the Bignonia plant family.

So there you have it. Other species of this are also planted at the WPG, exhibiting differing flower colours.

For those people who rang or visited in regard to those plantings, they are twining climbers and two worth considering are Pandorea jasminoides, with white or pink blooms, also P. jasminoides Lady Di, with yellow-centered, white blooms.

Big shows coming

NOW to the Warwick Horticultural Society activities. In last week's column, mention was made covering the 12 classes of the Annual Garden Competition.

However, entries for these terminated yesterday and judging will be carried out during Monday and Tuesday, October 19 and 20.

It is understood that my photos of many entries will be published in the Daily News possibly in lieu of my next column. …
