Joe Ready to Play the Diva to Show He's Got X Factor; TV HOPEFUL OPENS HIS HEART ON APPEARING ON TV SHOW

X FACTOR finalist Joe McElderry is planning to be a diva for this weekend's live shows.

The 18-year-old has spoken for the first time about being in the finals and the theme this week is divas - with Whitney Houston and Cheryl Cole both performing.

"It's diva week, so it's big songs, especially for the boys to do big diva songs," Joe told the Chronicle during a break from rehearsals.

"I've just been practising each day and throwing myself into it again."

On the prospect of meeting Whitney, he said: "I don't know if we will meet her, but we will see her on Saturday and Sunday at the studio. Just to be in the same building as her will be amazing."

Joe, from South Shields, won over the British public last weekend with a cover of Robbie Williams's No Regrets - with Robbie the star guest.

"I had a Robbie Williams song, and I got to meet him. I was thinking 'oh my god'. When he asked me if I had any questions I couldn't speak, I was starstruck.

"It was my first time performing to millions. It was a buzz - amazing. It was like someone pumping us with loads of energy.

"I was really, really nervous before I went out and my heart was pounding, but I got out there and totally relaxed and just went for it.

"I don't think you get your head around it. It is so surreal. You can feel there are 14 million people watching behind the cameras as there's this electric buzz throughout the studio."

Joe has struck up a close friendship with his mentor, fellow Geordie Cheryl Cole.

"When I get with Cheryl and we're talking together no one can understand us. I've got to tone my accent down for the people in London to understand me, and so does she.

"When we are talking together we are talking in this full Geordie accent, and everyone's like 'what the hell are you talking about?'," laughed Joe.

"I'm so pleased I have her as a mentor. Everything we do in the live show she makes sure we are comfortable with - what we are wearing, the song we are singing, the choreography. …
