ROBBERS launched a late-night attack after luring a taxi driver to a deserted dead-end.

James Palmer and Robert Wood had been on a booze bender in Newcastle city centre before they staged the brutal raid.

The pair got into Mehdi Rahnama's hackney cab near the Bigg Market shortly after one in the morning.

He was told to take them to Wallsend with front seat passenger Wood chatting cheerfully during the duration of the trip.

But the directions they gave only lead Mr Rahnama to the bottom of a cul-de-sac near Clavering Street, Newcastle Crown Court heard.

And once the cab came to a stop they teamed up to rob him of pounds 200 takings.

"Palmer leaned forward from the back seat, grabbed Mr Rahnama round the throat and squeezed so he was struggling to breath," said Julien Smith, prosecuting.

Wood then demanded money, repeatedly punched the stunned driver when he could not reach his cash bag, and finally ripped the victims pocket to reach a stash of notes after beating him again. …
