Ipswich Pair Impresses for Brisbane Side

IPSWICH Knights skipper Stephen Hughes is keen for more representative honours after leading the Brisbane 1 Select side to victory over a New Zealand combination on Saturday.

However, the home side - made up of Division 1 players - had to come from 1-0 down to secure victory 2-1 in the last 10 minutes.

Hughes, 32, picked up a yellow card in the second half for grabbing a player's shirt.

Despite the minor indiscretion, the Ipswich stalwart led the team well against the Auckland-based side at Perry Park, Brisbane.

"They were a good bunch of blokes," he said of the Division 1 players called together for the match.

Hughes was thrilled with the opportunity to play in his first Brisbane 1 rep team.

"It was good fun, a good experience," the sweeper said yesterday. "I loved it.

"We were pretty much over them in the first half but they were a quality side. Their league is similar to our Premier League."

Hughes played a full game as captain, along with Ipswich Knights team-mate Brodie Kenyon. …
