Davey Double Not Enough to Save Tynedale; RUGBY ROUND-UP

DESPITE a Spencer Davey double and five tries in all, Tynedale still lost out to powerful Esher in Corbridge yesterday.

Tom Borthwick's men grabbed a four-try bonus point thanks to that Davey brace and tries from Allen Rogers, Greg Irvin and Kevin Showler.

However, the flawless visitors - now with seven straight National One wins - were not to be denied, matching their hosts in try count and easing away through penalty goals to win the tie 42-27. James Copsey's double, and scores from Thomas Loizides, Joe Marler and David Slemen kept pace with Tynedale's free-scoring men, but it was their three penalties and four conversions that sealed the result.

Big-spending Esher are intent on marching back to the Championship after falling out of the old National One last season.

Winning in the usually-impenetrable Tynedale Park will only serve to feed that enthusiasm.

As for Tynedale, head coach Borthwick will have been disappointed to see his men match the visitors try-wise but fail to capitalise on that. …
