Article excerpt

I AM surprised at Sir Stuart Bell's stance on the tawdry affair of MPs' expenses, it seems that Sir Stuart is in direct opposition to the Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Sir Stuart is also a member of the Members Estimate Committee which will oversee any recommendations that Sir Thomas Legg will make. Sir Stuart should be removed from the committee for pre-empting decisions that committee will make.

93.8% of people who voted on the Gazette online poll believe that Sir Stuart is wrong.

Not surprisingly a number of MPs who will be required to pay back money, believe they should not do so. The claim by these MPs that they broke no rules at the time the claims were made is byzantine - they made the rules and took advantage. They must have known they were claiming in excess of what they were morally entitled to.

Gordon Brown to his credit has instructed Labour MPs to pay back any monies required by Sir Legg, The Tory Leader David Cameron has threatened to deselect any Tory MP who refuses to do so.

Sir Stuart is making matters worse for the Labour Party by prolonging the agony, The mother of all Parliaments is in disgrace worldwide and it seems the problem has not yet run its course The electorate at the next election will no doubt sort the wheat from the chaff.

JOHN BONE, Normanby * I SEE our MP Sir Stuart Bell is not giving upo the expenses saga without a fight - and that some of our other MPs won't disclose the outcome of the review of their expenses claims.

I am 73 years old, in poor health and had to move into a bungalow, but I had to do my own garden. …
