Carers Honoured with Free Lunch

FOR a few hours this week, 30 Lower Clarence carers left their worries behind and enjoyed a free lunch in their honour.

The lunch held at The Block in Yamba was the Lower Clarence Carer Support Group's way to celebrate Carers Week.

The carers in attendance were of various ages and backgrounds and cared for a range of loved ones, including partners, parents, children and friends.

"The majority of our carers are carers of children with disabilities and aged care carers," group coordinator Jo Vestergaard said.

Mrs Vestergaard, herself a carer, said the work could be isolating and it was easy to get bogged down in the routine of caring.

"Some people can't even go shopping without respite support, so you can imagine how isolating their role can be," she said.

That's why the Lower Clarence Carer Support Group meets at the Yamba Bowling Club once a month, providing a few precious hours of time out for the carers. …
