CHRIS HUGHTON has warned his Newcastle United players they must "rise above" taking on teams looking for a scalp in the Coca-Cola Championship.

United emerged from a cup tie atmosphere last night with nothing as Scunthorpe recorded one of the most famous results in their history. It leaves Newcastle with no win in four games and going into the home game with Doncaster Rovers under pressure, with the foundations laid by a good start to the campaign now quickly eroding.

Hughton told the Chronicle: "We have to learn very fast and wherever we go crowds will raise their game and crowds will raise their enthusiasm.

"We have to rise above that.

"We lost because we conceded poor goals and didn't put our chances away." Hughton cut a devastated figure last night at the final whistle but could only rue missed chances and poor defending.

He said: "It's hard to take.

"It was a game we tried to be positive in and we did create chances throughout. …
