Yikes, Let's Ease the Payne and Select Rich Cup Winner

Article excerpt

THE spectacular racing during October continued at the Ipswich Showgrounds last Wednesday night.

Five heats of the City of Ipswich Gold Cup were run over 520 metres.

Winning times were from 30.50 seconds to 30.79s.

That range of .29 of a second is equivalent to about four lengths in distance, suggesting an open final on Wednesday night.

Running 30.50 was Tap An Rack for Marburg's Graham Hall, from box one, a comfortable three lengths winner over Side Cutter for Barry Morris, of Lowood.

Tricia Fuller, of Park Ridge, produced Velocity Cloud to run 30.65 from box one, a four lengths victory over Smashing Lady for Jason Bloomfield of Greenbank.

Robo Raptor, for Tony Brett of Grandchester, was a strong finishing winner in 30.69 from box seven, by one length over Yikes for Christine Robartson (Churchable).

Running 30.79 from box two was Paddy Bell for Patricia Carrington, of Haigslea.

The dog ran down leader, Christine Robartson's Ease the Payne, to score by two lengths.

From box three, Santino Marella - for Stephen Rolph of Arana Hills - also clocked 30.79.

The dog came with a barnstorming run to wear down Bogie Ace for Neil Thompson of Bracken Ridge, scoring by two lengths.

* The box draw for Wednesday night's $25,000 to the winner final is: 1 Ease the Payne, 2 Robo Raptor, 3 Velocity Cloud, 4 Yikes, 5 Tap An Rack, 6 Paddy Bell, 7 Santino Marella, 8 Side Cutter. Reserves: 9 Smashing Lady, 10 Bogie Ace.

THE City of Ipswich Gold Cup was run over 512 metres from 1983 to 2001.

In 2002, the distance was increased slightly to 520 metres, with a repositioning of the starting boxes.

People with dogs drawn middle to outside next week can take heart from the results since 2002.

The winners have been Scottish Express for Greg Cannon (box 6), Freedom Bale for Tom Tzouvelis (box 7), Reg Kay's Fool's State (box 3), Raven Hill for Michael Johnstone (box 8), Ellie's Diamond for John Edwards (box 5), Ray Burman's Super Hornet (box 7) and last year, Ryan Ayre's Bogie Blue (box 2).

Bogie Blue's winning time of 30.43 is the race record.

No trainer with a runner in Wednesday's final has won the Cup before. …
