CHRIS HUGHTON does not believe Newcastle's shock 2-1 defeat at Scunthorpe will affect his chances of becoming the permanent manager.

Hughton, who has been in caretaker charge since the start of the season, has been offered the position on a full-time basis as Ashley prepares to take the promotion chasing crisis club off the market again.

The caretaker is due to meet with Mike Ashley after Saturday's game with Doncaster to thrash out the final details of a deal.

And despite a winless wobble that now extends to four games, Hughton is still confident of landing the job.

"The defeat at Scunthorpe will have no effect at all," he said. "As far as I know the talks are still going ahead. I'm still very confident the situation hasn't changed."

The former Spurs and Eire man accepted his side must learn to handle the pressure of being the team that everyone in the Championship wants to beat.

"I think it is a pressure on us," he said. "We are a side that everybody expects to do well and certainly our own supporters expect us to do well and that's the pressure that we carry with us in every game. …
