MPs Urge PM to Act on Illness; Lung Disease Victims' Fight

TYNESIDE MPs are piling on the pressure on Gordon Brown to get justice for victims of pleural plaques.

Blaydon's Dave Anderson, Jarrow's Stephen Hepburn and Easington MP John Cummings yesterday met the Prime Minister to ensure proposals to give sufferers of pleural plaques the right to compensation are passed into law.

It comes after proposed legislation overturning a 2007 Law Lords' ruling that snatched that right away passed through the Commons last week - in a major step forward in The Chronicle's campaign fighting to get justice for hundreds of Tyneside pleural plaques sufferers.

The Bill now has to go the Lords, but it faces a time squeeze with the current Parliamentary session ending in weeks.

The Government is still formulating its response to calls to overturn the ruling after months of dithering with Mr Brown yesterday raising concerns about medical evidence relating to the health impact of pleural plaques, a scarring of the lungs linked to exposure to asbestos. …
