Keeping a little work in your retirement picture may help you to have more retirement to enjoy.

Retirees who worked reduced hours remained healthier and could manage on their own longer than counterparts who retired and stopped working altogether, according to a study by researchers at the University of Maryland and California State University at San Bernandino in U.S. News & World Report.

Researchers said the health benefits attest to the value of staying busy physically and mentally and being socially engaged.

The study focused on 12,189 Americans between the ages of 51 and 61.

Some had been diagnosed with health problems that included diabetes, heart disease, stroke, lung cancer and high blood pressure. Some had psychiatric problems.

Researchers interviewed them every two years. They found that working some during retirement resulted in significant health benefits, regardless of sex, education or wealth, U.S. News & World Report said. …
