Mentor and Motivator Devoted to Making a Significant Difference

COAST property development elder statesman John Shadforth was once a negative worrier, in his own words.

That was until about 35 years ago when the 67-year-old philanthropist came into contact with the world of personal development.

"We grew up on a farm in North Queensland," he said.

"It was a small community and we only had a general store because local farmers formed a co-operative."

John's first experience in the property market was selling a farm and going into the motel business; the first step on the road to becoming one of the Coast's most trusted and respected businessman.

"That was when I began to understand capital-raising."

It wasn't long after that he went to a personal development seminar, which was a major turning point in his life. "For the first time in my life I heard someone say I had the opportunity to control my own destiny," John said.

From there, his personal confidence grew. He joined Toastmasters, giving him the courage to conduct his own marketing and business seminars.

But he also realised that in order to progress, you had to have encouragement.

Knowing how much personal development books helped and inspired him, John began buying them in bulk and giving them away to people, through the establishment of the Encouragement Foundation in 2007.

"(Then) the web came along and I realised I could create a box of books that went on forever that I could give away, but so could you, through the foundation website," he said.

The foundation was initiated for many reasons, one of them being his son Stephen. It was Stephen's words of hope and determination after losing his leg in a helicopter accident four years ago that gave John the strength he needed, to help him through it.

He also had an urge to better himself and to help people who were worse off than him. …
