ONE of the biggest workloads at today's Action Auto Group Gympie Cup race meet will be shouldered by young apprentice jockey Kayla Cross.

Cross has recently moved to Gympie from New South Wales to continue her apprenticeship with the Barry Gill stable, and is taking to the track an astounding six times.

The number of rides ensures the promising jockey an appearance in each of the six races comprising the day's program.

Cross was joined by Barry and Desiree Gill at the Gympie Showgrounds yesterday, feverishly going through preparations ahead of today's biggest meet of the year.

In total, the Gill Stable will have three starters in the feature race of the day - the $15,000 Action Auto Group Gympie Cup Open Handicap over 1600 metres.

Cross will be riding Red Roller fresh after savouring victory at the Wondai Cup last weekend.

Fellow Barry Gill trained Nevada Gambler, to be ridden by Dean McWhinney, is being touted early as a race favourite, but Cross is convinced she has the firepower to rival Red Roller's stable mate. …
