A TEESSIDE MP today said the Government was standing watch over Tees Valley's chemical industry.

Middlesbrough MP Sir Stuart Bell, recently wrote to Ian Lucas MP, Minister for Business and Regulatory Reform, regarding Teesside's process industry and the announcement by Dow Chemical Company that it will close its ethylene oxide and glycol plant at Wilton in January.

The Minister told Sir Stuart the Government has been following developments at the Dow plant and the Wilton complex very closely.

The MP said efforts were made earlier this year by the companies directly involved to find a commercially viable solution for the Dow site and the Government stood ready to assess any requests for support.

The Minister told Sir Stuart: "There have been more recently efforts to find ways of keeping the ethylene oxide plant open - even at this late stage - and as before we remain open to considering the scope for government support. If any proposals were to be put to the government we will consider them fairly, bearing in mind the need for commercial viability, value for taxpayers money, state aid rules and the wider implications for the Wilton site. …
