Mother-in-Law's Strength Is Inspiration

Mother-in law - what comes to your mind? A bad memory? Funny jokes? Not me. When I think of my mother-in-law, the words that come to mind are strong, energetic, giving, positive, unique and SURVIVOR!

I was 22 when I met my future mother-in-law. She immediately made me feel comfortable by telling me to call her Margie. I thought that was pretty cool.

My husband and I were a young married couple, living three hours away when we got the call. Margie was nonchalant, she had a lump in her breast. Margie wasn't a worrier. After all, she was the mother of three grown boys. She had lost her own mother to an unrelated illness as a young child. But this would be the biggest battle of her life.

When we found out that it was probably cancer, we started packing and planning our trip to Jacksonville to be here for her recovery. We knew that she would wake up during surgery and, after the conclusive pathology report, she would give the surgeon permission to remove her breast. At that point, I grieved for my second mom and wished I could be there to hold her hand before the surgery.

After the operation, Margie immediately began her exercises to strengthen her muscles so that she wouldn't lose the use of her arm. She did exactly what the doctors told her to do, and always had the nurses laughing. She was their inspiration. Thankfully, she didn't require chemo or radiation. She had reconstruction down the road, and I'll never forget the day she called me into her bedroom to show off her beautiful new breast.

Margie's four granddaughters and great-granddaughter love their "Nana" dearly. Her experience will teach them to be proactive with their health, but mostly it will cause them to remember how much faith and a positive spirit have played a role in their grandmother's good health. Their Nana who loves hot pink clothes with matching nail polish, earrings and crocs. …
