SLEEP deprivation, sensible bras, reading Mother and Baby instead of Vogue. The clues had been there. The balance of power had been swinging for years before my epic dethroning.

"Please don't make me," sobbed five-year-old Adam at his first soccer break-up.

My shy little guy was so terrified of collecting his trophy that his hands shook as he wrapped them around my shoulders and buried his face into my neck.

Deja vu hit me a year later at his first school concert.

Adam skipped on to the stage with the other grade ones and his teacher, Mrs Sturgeon.

Halfway through, our little guy fell over.

I handed our newborn, Cristian to my husband, put our two other toddlers, back in their seats and was about to defy my post-natal height/weight disparity and hurdle the 10 rows of seats in front of me, when my husband said "Look."

Adam got up and kept going - no tears.

Dave and I watched him set up his amp and tune his bass guitar before his first big stage concert five years later. …
