HOLLOWING out a turnip or a pumpkin and etching a scary face into it is so yesterday, darling.

These days, if you want to be hauntingly horrific on Halloween, you've got to have a great costume. For when darkness falls on Saturday night, streets around Teesside will be filled with mini witches, wizards, ghouls and foul fiends as kids dress up in their scariest best.

As Belmont Primary School in Guisborough geared up for its Halloween disco, JOANNE WELFORD asked those in the know what makes a good Halloween costume for a frightening Fashion Spy special.

Jemma Solley, eight: Describe your costume: I'm dressed as a witch - with a few spiders too.

Where did you get it? I made it. My mum got some spider web material, two lots for 50p, and we made a sarong and a shawl out of it. My tights are purple and have cobwebs on them and they were about pounds 1. What do you like best about it? I like my spider necklace. If you could dress up as anything on Halloween, what would it be? I'd be half witch and half cat.

Hollie Scott, six: Describe your costume: I'm dressed up as a cat.

Where did you get it? My mum bought me it from Sainsbury's, it was pounds 11. We got the mask separately. What do you like best about it? I like the paws best. If you could dress up as anything on Halloween, what would it be? I like being a cat. One year my mum dressed up in a scary costume and she was really scary!

Elizabeth Nicholson, six: Describe your costume: I'm a witch. I've got long purple hair, a stripy hat and purple stripy tights with a black dress.

Where did you get it? I've had it a while, I think my mum got it at Matalan or Boyes.

What do you like best about it? I really like the belt because it has a jewel on it. If you could dress up as anything on Halloween, what would it be? It would be funny to dress up as a pumpkin. …
