FOR the contestants of Australian Idol, their own idol is often Marcia Hines.

With a recording career that spans several decades and a swag of albums to her name, Marcia, pictured left, provides a friendly face for the young contestants to look up to.

But what happened when one of Australian Idol's grand dame's own heroes, Liza Minelli, arrived on set for a stint as mentor and guest judge?

Waterworks.

"I was so aware and I must be honest I am more of a fan of Liza's than her mum," Marcia said. "Maybe I could have related to Liza more because of the clothes she wore and the mad make up that she wore."

Marcia said that during the rehearsal for the show when Liza performed a medley of some of her biggest hits, she found herself crying while watching the megastar perform.

"I died when she was rehearsing but then I had to be really cool and know that I was in the company of greatness," Marcia told the Daily.

And thanks to some sugary treats, Marcia made an impact of her own on the music, film, television and theatre great, forming a memory which will no doubt bring a smile to Marcia's face for years to come.

"During the breaks, you don't get to see it, but they give us refreshments," Marcia said.

"I get a bowl of lollies and in my lollies are banana lollies and musk sticks and Liza loved them.

"We were just like little girls."

But hero worship aside, Marcia has an important job to do on Idol, even when Liza Minnelli is sitting next to her. And that job is to help the country decide who will be the next Australian Idol and she said this year the process has been incredibly difficult.

"What I think is the most fantastic thing about (this year's contestants) is that they are different, they are different to anyone we have had on the show before," she said.

"We have never had a girl like Hayley and I have never known somebody quite like Stan. …
