ON Saturday June Allen, Robert Blanchard, Peter James, Ron Bell and I had the honour and weighty responsibility of judging candidates for the 2009 Jacaranda Queen titles.

It was quite an experience for all of us.

The first round of judging was done in the quiet setting of a private residence and involved meeting the candidates in a social setting and then sitting with them, one at a time, to assess their suitability for the Jacaranda Queen title.

Each of the young women started nervously - hardly surprising given the effort they had put in and the magnitude of the day. But as each of the interviews progressed, each candidate became more relaxed and revealed more of their personality.

They were all impressive.

It might sound trite as after every competition like this the judges will say there was nothing between the candidates.

We know that at least in this case, that was correct. …
