Fire Destroys 600ha of Bush; Locals Band Together

INTERMITTENT bits of green stand out amongst black scorched earth and charred tree branches to the left of the Wide Bay Highway near the Woolooga turn off after about 600 hectares of farm and bushland were burnt and one rare surviving tree or shrub miraculously remained untouched.

The blaze, which is believed to have had a suspicious start on Monday along the Wide Bay Highway road-side, re-ignited at midday on Thursday and rural fire fighters have been battling it ever since.

Yesterday, fire fighters back burned the eastern side of the blaze.

And community members pulled together to help mend fences damaged in the inferno.

Fencing contractor Tony Stegman, Peter Counihan and Nick Davies were among those who responded to the call for help.

Mr Davies said they had all lived in the area all of their lives and just wanted to help out.

"It's a community thing," he said.

The man who owned the property where they were working was elderly and couldn't do the work himself, so it was up to the volunteers to help stop his cattle from escaping onto the road. …
